Adverbs of Manner Exercises

These exercises are based on the Reading and Use of English paper where you may be tested on this grammar point.

Open close - write one word to complete the sentence.

Key word transformation - ​complete the second sentence so that it has a similar meaning to the first sentence, using the word given. Do not change the word given. You must use between two and five words, including the word given. 

Key word transformation

The athletes trained with surprising intensity before the race.
INTENSELY
The athletes trained ____________________the race.

surprisingly intensely before

surprisingly modifies the manner adverb intensely.

Key word transformation

I can understand him easily now that he speaks with more clarity.
CLEARLY
I can understand him easily now that he ____________________ .

speaks more clearly

clear becomes clearly (regular -ly). Adverb of manner after a verb of speaking.

Key word transformation

The teacher answered all the students' questions with lots of patience.
PATIENTLY
The teacher ____________________ to all the students’ questions.

answered very patiently

patiently describes the manner of answering.

Key word transformation

She found it easy to solve the maths problem and didn’t need any help.
SOLVED

Adverb easily describes the verb solved.

He moved in a very slow and careful way.
SLOWLY

Two adverbs describe his movement.

so + adverb + that expresses consequence.

nearly means almost, different from near.

so + adverb + that to express a strong result can be paraphrased with in such a + adjective + noun.

Negative form + adverb to show lack of thoughtful behaviour.

friendly is an adjective finishing in -ly, so we use in a … way.

QUICKLY

surprisingly modifies the manner adverb quickly.

The children behaved in a very noisy way during the performance.
NOISILY
The children ____________________ the performance.

Convert noisy to noisily to describe the verb behaved.

Key word transformation

He isn’t careful enough when he drives as he should be.
CAREFULLY
He ____________________ as he should.

does not/doesn’t drive carefully enough

Use adverb form carefully + enough to express insufficient degree.

Key word transformation

Her voice was so soft that I couldn’t hear her.
SOFTLY

soft becomes softly. Use so + adverb + that to express result.
