These exercises are based on the Reading and Use of English paper where you may be tested on this grammar point.
Open close - write one word to complete the sentence.
Key word transformation - complete the second sentence so that it has a similar meaning to the first sentence, using the word given. Do not change the word given. You must use between two and five words, including the word given.

HAD

Third conditional using If + past perfect + would have + past participle.
Key word transformation
In the snowy weather we don’t go to school.
IT

Zero conditional for something that always happens.
Key word transformation
She might come to the party but only if she finishes early.
IF

if she does not/doesn’t finish
First conditional with modal verb might in result clause. Late replaces early so a negative verb is needed,
Key word transformation
He isn’t a doctor so he can’t treat people.
COULD

Second conditional using could + base verb for imaginary ability.
Key word transformation
I always phone my mum the moment I get to the airport.
SOON
I always phone my mum _____________________ at the airport.

Zero conditional using as soon as when the result always follows. Note: get to is replaced by arrive at.
Key word transformation
If he doesn’t practise every day, he won’t improve.
UNLESS

First conditional for likely result.
Key word transformation
You can stay here only if you keep quiet.
AS

First conditional using as/so long as to mean only if.

Second conditional for very unlikely event.
Key word transformation

Key word transformation

First conditional. Provided (that) means only if.

WHEN

Zero conditional using when + present simple for habits and repeated actions.

UNLESS

First conditional. Unless = if not. After unless use a positive verb form.

Water becomes ice when the temperature goes below 0°C.
IF

Zero conditional for scientific fact. When can replace if with no change in meaning.
