These exercises are based on the Reading and Use of English paper where you may be tested on this grammar point.

Open close - write one word to complete the sentence.

Key word transformation - ​complete the second sentence so that it has a similar meaning to the first sentence, using the word given. Do not change the word given. You must use between two and five words, including the word given.

Be allowed to is used for permission in the past. Could is usually not used.

HAD

Had better expresses strong advice, often a warning.

Key word transformation

After the operation, she will finally have the ability to walk.
ABLE

Will be able to expresses future ability.

Was able to is used for ability in a specific situation.

Couldn't and wasn’t able to are interchangeable in past negative sentences.

Must (strong obligation) often changes to have to in paraphrases because must cannot be used in the past/future.
